May Farm to School News

Thanks to Healthy Roots and Nelson's True Value in Prairie du Chien, eighteen raised garden boxes, plus soil and plants were delivered to child care programs throughout Crawford County! This "Ready Set Grow" project gives young children hands-on experience growing their own healthy food. Child care providers attended a training to learn how to incorporate gardening in a day care setting. Their first project with children was to create bucket gardens with tomato plants and lettuce seeds.  Now their raised garden beds will have a range of vegetable plants including kohlrabi, Brussels sprouts and broccoli. Watch for pictures in upcoming newsletters!

We are so excited about this project! Healthy Roots is jumping in to expand Farm to School programming into the local day care setting and is utilizing this project as a strategy to increase healthy eating options. Our youngest community members are learning to make important healthy food choices in such a fun, hands-on way. So Cool!
