We are pleased to announce that Haley Mahr is our new nutrition educator for the Crawford County Americorps
Farm to School program! Though she’s from the other side of the state, she’s excited to dive
into “a position with an organization that values community, health, and sustainability.” Her
previous experience as an FFA officer and student health educator with the Northern Michigan
University Health Promotion Office will help her get off to a great start!

Great News for our Program!
We received word that Crawford County has been accepted as a host site
for the AmeriCorps Farm to School
program for the 2015-2016 school year! This means we are now seeking
two individuals interested in serving half-time positions as AmeriCorps
members beginning mid-August. Available are a half-time nutrition
education position and a half-time community outreach
position. More information and applications will be available at
http://crawford.uwex.edu. This is great news for our program and we look forward to continuing the great work we've been able to do in Crawford County as a result of the AmeriCorps Farm to School program! Yeah!

May Farm to School News
Thanks
to Healthy Roots and Nelson's True Value in Prairie du Chien, eighteen
raised garden boxes, plus soil and plants were delivered to child
care programs throughout Crawford County! This "Ready Set Grow" project
gives young children hands-on experience growing their own healthy
food. Child care providers attended a training to learn how to
incorporate gardening in a day care setting. Their first project with
children was to create bucket gardens with tomato plants and lettuce
seeds. Now their raised garden beds will have a range of vegetable
plants including kohlrabi, Brussels sprouts and broccoli. Watch for
pictures in upcoming newsletters!
We are so excited
about this project! Healthy Roots is jumping in to expand Farm to School
programming into the local day care setting and is utilizing this
project as a strategy to increase healthy eating options. Our youngest
community members are learning to make important healthy food choices in
such a fun, hands-on way. So Cool!
